Violence in Burundi leaves one dead as country protests president's 3rd term bid

Burundi's president Pierre Nkurunziza is running for a third term which he promises will be his last but citizens don't want to hear any of it. There have been demonstrations in the country for almost 2 weeks now, but it turned deadly this morning after one person was shot dead by police and 3 others seriously injured. The police reportedly used live ammunition to disperse protesters, killing one. 13 people have so far died since April 26th, the day demonstrations began following Pres. Nkurunziza announcement that he would seek re-election.

The fight is happening in Burundi's capital Bujumbura between the president's supporters and people who want him out. Many protesters have also been arrested and are being held by government forces.

Burundi's constitutional court on Tuesday May 5th ruled that the president can run for a third term if he wants, that he wasn't violating the constitution's two-term limit, saying "renewal of the presidential term through direct universal suffrage" is permitted. This didn't go down well with the opponents who say it violates their constitution.

Burundi's election will hold on June 26th and citizens say they want another president.

Over 25,000 Burundians have fled the country to neigbouring countries following the violent protests. They say they are afraid there might be another civil war in the country. The last one ended in 2006 after 13 years.

Oba Akiolu who first stated this in April while making his controversial speech to Igbo leaders, said he still maintains his position that Mr Agbaje will not be governor of the state. Oba Akiolu said this while speaking at the public policy lecture organized by the Institute of Directors, IoD and launch of the book "The Example: The Era of Babatunde Raji Fashola as Governor of Lagos State,’ in Lagos yesterday May 6th. Read what the Oba said after the cut...

"On May 14, 2014 when I first told all residents of Lagos that the next governor of the state will be Ambode, many didn’t believe me. I knew all the waters that have passed under the bridge, including my own blood relations, who without consulting me went with others to say that Bola Tinubu, Fashola and Oba Akiolu have pocketed Lagos, saying that this time, they will not allow that. And I told them that Jimi (Agbaje) will never be the governor. I still maintain it. There is no going back. I have no doubt in my mind, with the cooperation and prayers of everyone, Ambode will perform very well. I told many people that Bola Tinubu planted the seed, Fashola came and watered the seed and it started germinating in geometrical progressions. We have just started" he said (Source: Vanguard)

Man stabbed to death by Generator repairer in Lagos

Description

The Chief Security Officer of the God’s Own Estate in Ijanikin, Badagry, Lagos Tochukwu Ejika, has died following stab wounds he sustained during a fight with a generator repairer, Ayo Abimbola, pictured above, on May 3rd. According to Punch, the suspect had gone to repair the generator of a friend of his in the said estate when the incident happened.
“I repair generators for people in that estate and I have been doing the job since 2001. I had stayed in four different apartments but I was sent out of my last apartment because my landlord was always trying to interfere in my personal affair. He always complained that I beat my girlfriend. My friend, Olokun, on Friday invited me to repair his generator. I went to his house with some clothes because I planned to beg him to let me stay with him for a few days. He was not at home, but I met his wife. After repairing the generator, I dropped the bag there and told his wife to explain to him that I would like to live with them for a while. I went back to the area the next day to repair generators for some more people. It was when I finished that I went back to Olokun’s house to know if I could stay with him.” the suspect said
According to him, on getting to his friend’s house at about 8pm, the wife told him that the husband declined his request and he picked his belongings and left the estate. He said as he was leaving, he met with the deceased who ordered him to return to where he was coming from
“I did not know he was the chief security officer and he did not tell me who he was. But when he said I should go back, I decided to approach him and explain what was happening to him. He picked a plank and hit me in the head with it. I dragged the plank from him and stabbed him in the head too. He became angry and picked a dagger and stabbed me in the elbow. In annoyance, I seized it from him and struck him in the stomach and he fell down,” he said.
The deceased died moments later. The suspect was apprehended by other security officers who beat him up and handed him over to the Ijanikin police men.
The Lagos state police command spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the incident, said the matter has been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Panti for further investigation.

Amosun flays NNPC over incessant vandalism of pipelines

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has attributed the incessant vandalism of petroleum pipelines by oil thieves across the country partly to negligence on the part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
He said this on Wednesday when he visited the scene of a vandalised petroleum pipeline along Iperu-Ogere Road in the Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.
Some suspected vandals had ruptured another pipeline in the same area on Tuesday.
The governor said the issue of  vandalism was a reflection of the state of the nation.
He said, “Vandalism is a daily occurrence which shows the way we are as a nation. I still maintain that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is part of the problem being the agency assigned to ensure that things like this do not happen.
“This is either dereliction of duty or negligence on the part of the agency of government.

“I don’t know how it would be difficult for us as a nation to prevent the recurrence of this ugly incidence.”
Amosun said in 2012 after such incident at Arepo, President Goodluck Jonathan had invited him to his office in Abuja, where he gave him some solutions to pipeline vandalism.
Amosun, who was visibly angry at the colossal loss of revenue to vandals, said nothing was done about it.
While he suggested that governors of various states, where petroleum pipelines pass through, should be involved in checkmating vandals, he alleged that there was complicity of influential people in pipeline vandalism.
Amosun, who decried the award of pipeline protection contract to a group by the Federal Government, noted that the deployment of modern technology and relevant security agencies should be considered for the nation’s multi-billion naira investment.
The state’s Commander, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Akinwande Aboluwoye, urged villagers in the vicinity, where petroleum pipelines were located, to give information to security agents on how to tackle vandalism.

Dangote insists on buying Arsenal

ADVERTISEME

President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said he is still working towards buying Arsenal Football Club, despite the fact that his bid to acquire a stake in the club was rebuffed by the owners in 2010.
In an interview with Bloomberg, while on a journey from Addis Ababa to Lagos last Friday, Dangote expressed hope that his new strategy would enable him buy the north London club at a price the owners won’t want to resist.
He said, “I still hope, one day at the right price, that I’ll buy the team. I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won’t want to resist. I know my strategy,” Dangote, a known fan of the north London club, said.
Dangote is rated to be worth $15.7bn, and has interests in cement, sugar and flour. He is currently investing $11bn in a 650,000 barrel-a-day oil refinery in Ondo State, and $2.5bn in gas pipelines running from the Niger-Delta area to Lagos.
He is positive that his new bid for the control of Arsenal will likely come in a few years after he is done with current investments and have taken his business to a certain level.
“We have $16 billion-worth of investments in the next few years. Right now I want to take my own business to a certain level. Once I finish on that trajectory, then maybe, (an offer will follow),” he said.
Arsenal, who are among the most successful clubs in England, having won the English League 13 times, kept their hope of finishing in second place this season behind league winners Chelsea alive by beating Hull 3-1 on Monday. The Gunners also hope to retain the FA Cup which they won last season after going eight years without a trophy.
Arsenal Holdings Plc., is valued at £988m ($1.49 bn).
American, Stan Kroenke, who is also owner of the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams, and rated at $5.6bn, holds 67 per cent of Arsenal, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Red & White Sec Ltd., controlled by Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov and Farhad Moshiri, owns 30 per cent.
If his new bid sails through, Dangote will be the first African owner of a club in the EPL where billionaires like Russia’s Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea, and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, who controls Manchester City, have acquired teams.
Dangote is among the club’s fans who believe Arsene Wenger, who has managed it since 1996, has done well from a financial standpoint, but was quoted as saying Wenger “needs to change his style a bit. They need new direction.”

I don’t know if Buhari is the messiah – Abidoye

The Chairman and Spiritual Father of Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church Worldwide, Rev. Samuel Abidoye, has said he does not know if the President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, is the messiah Nigeria needs.
He, however, said he was certain that Buhari and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, were credible and committed people, who would make positive impacts on the governance of the country and the lives of the people.
He spoke in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday during the 46th Mount Horeb Ascension of the  church along Ilorin-Ibadan Expressway.
He noted that Buhari, given his antecedent of introducing the War Against Indiscipline when he was the Head of State, would bring about the necessary attitudinal change in Nigerians.
He also said Osinbajo, being a pastor and a man of integrity, would add value to  good and purposeful governance.

The cleric also commended the outgoing President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, for conceding defeat after the presidential election and paving the way for peace, national stability and violence-free election and transition.
Abidoye said, “Is he the messiah we are looking for?  I do not know if Buhari is the messiah we are looking. When I compare the two together, the President-elect is a man of discipline and the pastor beside him, I can say that corruption is gone, put it that way. You cannot stop corruption entirely.
“I want to congratulate Nigerians again on having them. I thank God, a change of government has come. It was our prayer. All Nigerians prayed with one voice. May God help them do what they are expected to do.”
The C&S Spiritual head also said Buhari’s incoming government would inherit a lot of challenges.
He noted that the nation was bedeviled by corruption and lack of infrastructure and good amenities.
He urged all Nigerians to pray for the incoming administration so that the nation’s challenges would be substantially addressed.
Abidoye said, “There are so many things he should do. We lack electricity and good roads. We have nothing at all presently. I call it woes of Nigeria. There are many problems around. Except we have somebody like Messiah to help us, the problems are so many. Anyway you look at it, no railway, electricity, no good road, look at the level of corruption.”

Te school bus
Tragedy struck in Osogbo on Wednesday when a 200 level law student at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Miss. Mary Ibitolu, was  crushed to death by a bus belonging to a private secondary  school in Osogbo.
Our correspondent gathered that the deceased was on a commercial motorcycle when the bus which was said to have suffered brake failure hit the bike and knocked her down.
She was said to have been rushed to a private  hospital at Okefia where she gave up the ghost. The motorcyclist was said to have survived the accident. A commuter, who was waiting to board a bus was also said to have been knocked down but survived.
One of the eyewitnesses, a hawker in front of Osogbo High School where the accident happened told our correspondent that the school bus broke down but the driver called on some passers by to assist him to push-start the engine.
He said the engine started running and the driver moved it but he  suddenly discovered that the brake had failed when he was approaching the motorcycle conveying Ibitolu.
“He tried to stop the bus from hitting the motorcycle but he failed. She fell off  and was rushed to a hospital at Okefia but they said she died there.
One of the members of  of the the Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students at the OAU, Mr. Timothy Agbor, told our correspondent that Ibitolu was a member of the fellowship.
Agbor said, ” I was shocked when somebody called and informed me that she had died in an accident. Mary was a God fearing lady. I can’t believe she is gone.  It is too soon.”
He aaded that a requiem mass was ongoing for the deceased at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osogbo as of the time of filing this report.
The bus and the motorcycle were said to have been taken to Dada Estate Police Station. Although the bus and the motorcycle were seen at the police station,  policemen there declined  to comment about the accident and they referred our correspondent to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro.
However, efforts to speak to the PPRO proved abortive as calls to her telephone did not connect.

Wow! When Romanian star was told her mother was about to die she replied coldly: "Call me when she's dead"

According to reports, this model and actress snubbed her mum's deathbed plea for reconciliation and instead flashed her boobs on a raunchy TV show. Oana Zavoranu opted to wear a see-through dress on Romanian TV despite having been told her mother was just moments from death.

The controversial star had been told that her mum Marioara was about to die by reporters, but she shocked them when she simply replied: "Call me when she's dead.". Her mother later died.

Miss Zavoranu, 41, fell out with her mother after the 67-year-old revealed she was unhappy about her daughter's relationships and how she was upset with her daughter speaking about gypsy fortune-tellers.

The deeply religious mother felt it contradicted her Christian upbringing and the two barely spoke.
Miss Zavoranu's reputation only worsened after she made international headlines recently when it was alleged she had tried to blackmail a doctor into giving her a free boob job also had a very public falling out with her elderly mother.

The row could have been easily settled after Marioara announced publicly that she held no grudges and wanted to still see her daughter, but Oana made it very clear that she wanted nothing to do with the older woman.

Marioara (pictured above), who according to medics was at the end in considerable pain, has however left a last message for her child on TV saying that she forgives her.

She said: "I am not doing this because I want to cause any problems, I want her to know that I love her and I want to find peace with her.

"I forgave Oana a long time ago. If God has any reason to find fault with her based on anything she may have done with me, then I ask him not to hold it against her because I don't.
"I love her and forgave her everything the moment she was born. My one final wish is that God may help us see each-other in good spirits in another life."

To prove the point, Marioara’s fortune, mainly inherited from a man that she married after Oana's natural father died and which is estimated to be worth around £47million, will all be left to Oana. The various investments include a private cemetery.

Asked if she had considered changing her will Marioara said: "I only have one heir. How can I leave the money to anyone else but Oana? I’ve got a few stores, a warehouse and a few other things. It is all for her."

The last time they spoke was in front of TV cameras when Oana had turned up at the hospital and had asked about her inheritance, and her mother had asked if she would stop treating her like a stranger.
The appeal fell on deaf ears, and instead Oana had gone to a popular TV show dressed in the white transparent dress, where she showed her boobs to prove that she is proud of her body at the age of 41 and that her breasts looked good after her seventh boob job.

Moreover, confronted with local fashion designer and critique Iulia Albu, Oana tried to mock her by wearing an extravagant but funny hat and taking off her panties.

Hours later, at 9.30am, Marioara Zavoranu died. She only had one kidney and had been kept alive through medical devices for the past few days hoping for a deathbed reconciliation that never happened.
