Reps Speakership: Gbajabiamila Is Having It Rough

The race is getting heated. What would have been a consensus in the build-up to the race for Speakership of the House of Reps hit the brick wall on Monday as there was no clear-cut agreement between the potential parties - Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) and Hon. Abdul-Mumini Jibrin (APC, Kano).

The latter, before stories about his decison to step down to run as deputy to the former, was one of the nine contenders for the numero uno position.

As this development unfolded, a group of legislators under the aegis of The Patriots, reiterated that it would back any of the candidates with the requisite experience to run the eighth assembly of the House.

But in a sudden volte face, perhaps informed by powerful lobby from interest groups in his North-West zone, who are of the view that the zone should be represented in the caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), suggested that Jibrin should team up with Gbajabiamila.
The argument of the group is that although Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is from the North-West, he is now a representative of the entire country and by virtue of this the area should get a befitting presence in the caucus by getting one of the six topmost jobs in the country.

Emboldened by this thrust, Jibrin, THISDAY learnt on Monday, reached out to Gbajabiamila on Sunday asking him to be part of a media briefing at which he (Jibrin) would announce that he has stepped down from the race in support of the Lagos politician.

However, supporters of Gbajabiamila, THISDAY gathered, prevailed on him not to be part of the briefing as it would only lend credence to Jibrin’s likely future claims of having overwhelming support in the green chamber, which he made available to Gbajabiamila.

“It may also give Jibrin the confidence to make demands on Gbajabiamila in case the latter becomes the Speaker,” a source at the Sunday meeting said.

“To be candid with you, we from the North were the ones that advised Gbajabiamila to stay away from Jibrin’s press parley. We told him (Gbajabiamila) that we are in support of the proposed zoning formula, which gives the position of Deputy Speaker to the North-east and or North-West,” the source explained.

He also added: “Jibrin wants to use our support base to enhance his ambition; and we will not key into that.”

Photo: Suspect Arrested by NDLEA Says Selling Banned Drugs Enabled Him Marry 3 Wives

A suspect arrested by the Niger State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has admitted that selling banned drug is big business for him.  Because with the proceeds, he married three wives.

The Commander, Mr. Joseph Iweajuanwa, told Crime Watch Today in Minna, that 638.87 kilogrammes of the banned drugs seized in the state were cannabis, 11.7kilogrammes, dizapham, 23.03 kilogrammes, tranagol while 29.26 kilogrammes were cough syrup with codeine.

He said a total of 526 kilogrammes of the drugs were seized in March in Kontagora. According to the
NDLEA boss, the agency secured four convictions out of 26 suspects.

The suspect, Abdullahi Aliyu, who is now cooling his heels at the Minna headquarters of the agency over allegations of selling banned drugs said he resorted to dealing in drugs when his efforts to join the Army failed.

He was one of the suspects allegedly dealing in chloroform, a banned substance, across Niger State. The drug variously called ‘suck and die’, ‘suku dai’ or ‘soku daiye’ is said to be used mostly by youths to make them high.

Aliyu said he was aware that the business was illegal, but it provided him with regular money with which he takes care of his family.
“I know one day I will be caught, but I can’t leave it because that is where I got money to feed my wife and my children”
Iweanjunwa said six youths have reportedly died while inhaling the substance, pointing out that the people of Paiko went into spontaneous jubilation at the arrest of Abdullahi.

According to the NDLEA boss, 13 litres of the substance was found with the suspect who claimed that he was supplied by Yakubu Lawan, who is also in the NDLEA net over similar allegation.

Blogger Critical of Islam gets Hacked to Death (Photo)

Ananta Bijoy Das is at least the third blogger killed this year in Bangladesh for online posts critical of Islam

The attack on bloggers critical of Islam has taken on a disturbing regularity in Bangladesh with yet another writer hacked to death Tuesday.

According to CNN, Ananta Bijoy Das, 32, was killed Tuesday morning as he left his home on his way to work at a bank. Four masked men attacked him, hacking him to death with cleavers and machetes. The men then ran away. Because of the time of the morning when the attack happened, there were few witnesses. But police said they are following up on interviewing the few people who saw the incident.
"It's one after another after another," said Imran Sarker, who heads the Blogger and Online Activists Network in Bangladesh. "It's the same scenario again and again. It's very troubling."
Das' death was at least the third this year of someone who was killed for online posts critical of Islam. In each case, the attacks were carried out publicly on city streets. He was an atheist who contributed to Mukto Mona ("free thinkers"), the blog that Roy founded. Mukto Mona contains sections titled "Science" and "Rationalism," and most of the articles hold science up to religion as a litmus test, which it invariably fails.

In 2006, the blog awarded him its Rationalist Award for his "deep and courageous interest in spreading secular & humanist ideals and messages in a place which is not only remote, but doesn't have even a handful of rationalists."

Soon after his death, his Facebook wall was flooded with messages of shock and condolence.
"We are ashamed, brother Bijoy," posted someone.
"Is a human life worth so little? Do we not have the right to live without fear?" wrote another.
In March, Washiqur Rahman, 27, was hacked to death by two men with knives and meat cleavers just outside his house as he headed to work at a travel agency in the capital, Dhaka. In February, a Bangladesh-born American blogger, Avijit Roy, was similarly killed with machetes and knives as he walked back from a book fair in Dhaka.

You Don’t Get Any Respect Being Nude – Toyin Tomato

Shola-Shobowale
Nudity as we know nowadays, has become part of our society – Someone is either flaunting cleavage or some bare butt – However, veteran actress, sola Sobowale, aka Toyin Tomato, who has been off the radar for a while now, in an interview with Vanguard lately, said nudity isn’t part of the Nigerian culture and should be stopped in the entertainment industry – She said:

“Nobody forces you to do anything. We need education and we need exposure. I’m a typical Nigerian woman, I love my Naija and our culture; there are some things we don’t do, it’s not in our culture. If we say we want to do it, we can do it in our house under our roof not in the public because you get no respect doing that. Our producers and directors need to know that when you are acting as a prostitute, you don’t need to remove your dress to become a prostitute. You don’t need to be touched to act as a grade A prostitute.”
You agree???
