Buhari narrates how youths almost overwhelmed his security detail, says only God can protect a leader

While receiving a delegation of FCT Muslim community at the presidential villa this morning, Pres. Buhari narrated how his security detail was almost overwhelmed by some youths who were excited to see him as he left the Sallah prayer ground. According to him, the incident showed that policemen and soldiers cannot protect you, only God can.
"Today, during and immediately after the prayers, I think I was bombarded by the youths who almost overwhelmed the security, and I had to hold tight to my gown to get to my car. I was advised to enter the car from the ADC side and I refused. I went across trying to wave my hand to the wild youths who wanted to see me. On an occasion like this, it shows that after what happened to President Ronald Reagan of the USA, it is only God Almighty that protects leaders because in a mob like this, anybody with a sharp knife can get access and do a lot of damage. So, all the policemen that were deployed and soldiers since six o’ clock in the morning, before I came out two hours later in the rains, cannot protect you, only God protects. I hope God will continue to protect us.” he said

Obama becomes 1st sitting president to visit prison; pushes reform

On Thursday, President Barack Obama visited the Federal Correctional Institution El Reno, a medium-security facility near Oklahoma City, becoming the 1st sitting president to visit a federal prison.
Earlier this week, President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentences of 46 people serving lengthy jail terms for nonviolent drug offenses.

Officials opened a cell for the president so that he could see how prisoners are confined. The cell contained: "a double bunk bed and third bed along the wall, a toilet and sink, along with a small bookcase and three lockers." "Three full-grown men in a 9-by-10 cell," the president noted.

The president sat with some six inmates who told him of their experiences both inside and outside prison.
"When they describe their youth and their childhood, these are young people who made mistakes that aren't that different than the mistakes I made," Obama said.
He added that had the men had support structures growing up, they may have made vastly different choices. The sentiment is part of a bigger push from the Obama administration to end harsh punishments for nonviolent drug offenders, which includes the elimination of mandatory minimum sentences.

Obama said that the US has become immune to the number of young people incarcerated for long periods of time for stupid mistakes.
"It's not normal," he said."It's not what happens in other countries. What is normal is teenagers doing stupid things. What is normal is young people making mistakes."

He added,
"We've got to be able to distinguish between dangerous individuals who need to be incapacitated and incarcerated versus young people who, in an environment in which they are adapting, but if given different opportunities, a different vision of life, could be thriving the way we are."

Saraki’s Take on Buhari's new Service Chiefs Stirs Controversy

A controversial message posted on Twitter by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Monday night, sparked a serious controversy which forced his media team to make clarifications that further provoked even more critical reactions from Nigerians, on Tuesday.

Saraki, in his tweet, said that President Muhammadu Buhari did not require the approval of the Senate to nominate the country’s service chiefs. He specifically said it was not the business of the Senate to approve the appointment of service chiefs.
Saraki was reacting to the President’s statement on Monday that the newly-appointed service chiefs would function in acting capacity pending the Senate’s approval.

He noted that the upper chamber could only approve the appointments of ministers and heads of Federal Government agencies.
The Senate President wrote, “Appointment of service chiefs is an exclusive function of Mr. President. Senate can only approve ministerial, parastatals etc.”

But while reacting to the controversy generated by the statement, Saraki’s media team said those who made comments on the social media over the issue actually misinterpreted Saraki’s message.

The statement read in part:
"The attention of the Media Office of the Senate President has been drawn to a story making the rounds to the effect that the Senate does not need to screen or confirm the new service chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“However, we want to make it abundantly clear that based on inquiries made from the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on whether the Senate was consulted before the appointment of the new service chiefs was announced, he had in response tweeted that the appointment of service chiefs is the exclusive function of the President as stipulated by the constitution.

“Let it be known that his comment is now being misinterpreted to say the Senate will neither screen nor confirm the new service chiefs. This is far from the truth.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Saraki has said his comment is without prejudice to the extant laws and court pronouncements on the issue and that the Senate will do the needful when the list of the new service chiefs is sent to it by Mr. President.”

Buhari Orders Security Agencies to Crack Down on The Pirates Destroying Nollywood

It is not just about giving money to groups in Nollywood to share. The industry should be salvaged!

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed law enforcement agencies to step up their efforts to curb the menace of pirates in Nigeria's entertainment industry so artistes can enjoy the fruits of their labour.
"Nollywood is making progress. We should work with them. Unless they are backed, they will be ruined by pirates who want to reap where they have not sowed. They have built an industry with their own sweat. It is therefore incumbent on us to give them the necessary support," President Buhari said.
President Buhari gave the directive after receiving a briefing from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan and her Directors Tuesday in Abuja.

He charged law enforcement agencies to identify the perpetrators of copyright piracy, their sponsors and collaborators, and bring them to justice.

President Buhari also charged the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to tap into the opportunities presented by their wide reach to shore up their revenue profiles.

UNILAG Lecturer Fights Woman In Public, Strips Her

I wonder the kind of morals such a lecturer will inculcate into students if he can't control himself. How sad!

A lecturer with the University of Lagos, Mr Arthur Avwokeni Joseph, was detained at Alade Police Station in Somolu, Lagos State, after he allegedly fought a lady at petrol station and tore her clothes.

Mr. Joseph, 47, who works at the Business Administration Department of the university, went to a filling station along Fola Agoro Road, Somolu, to buy fuel when there was an altercation between him and 28-year-old Adeparusi Yetunde over who should buy the product first.
Mr. Joseph immediate alighted from his car and threatened Yetunde that if she were one of his students he would have dealt with her...

After the threat and further exchange of words between them, Joseph allegedly slapped Yetunde and she also grabbed him. In the ensuing scuffle her clothes were also torn by the man.
According to PM News, Mr. Joseph seized Yetunde’s cell phone while she also seized some of his books.

After the incident, Mr. Joseph went to Alade police station and reported the incident. When asked about the whereabouts of Yetunde, he said he did not know.

He was then asked to write a statement and while writing the statement, Yetunde’s phone that was with him rang and when the police picked the call and asked if she was the owner, she said yes and she was asked to come to Alade Police station where it was discovered that her clothes were torn.

The lecturer was detained along side Yetunde. Both were later granted bail. Two fighting!
