Senators Use Lamps And Torches to Probe Power Sector After Power Failure at NASS

Yesterday, The senate was deliberating and probing the power sector when a power outage occured. The anger of the senators was evident as most of them were seen hurling curses at PHCN and accusing the executives of power distribution companies present of intentional sabotage.

Power was cut at least twice within a period of six minutes between 2.20pm and 2.26pm. At the third outage at about 3.12 pm, the chairman of the committee conducting the probe, Abubakar Kyari could no longer hide his frustration.

“Are you tired? Are you guys calling your people to do this?” he asked the executives of the power companies present at the probe.

Things were to get even worst. Moments after he spoke two power outages followed at 3.26pm and 3.31 pm.

At this point, the probe panel resorted to receiving presentations using lights from media cameras, torches and rechargeable lamps.

Meanwhile,  the Director-General of the Bureau for Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, told the senate committee did not know how much it cost to privatise the country’s power plant and should be given time to present the exact amount.

He said he needed to find out the cost of building the power plants.

Dikki was responding to a question from a committee member who asked him to  “tell Nigerians how much the power plants were sold because during Tuesday’s hearing, the committee was told $USD 8.23bn was what was spent on these plants prior to the privatisation.’’

“I do not know how much the (power) plants were constructed. I will make available the documents later,” the BPE DG answered.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, had denied speculations that the Federal Government was planning a wholesale privatisation of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

He said, “I want to correct an impression, government has no plan to privatise TCN; what we are doing is to work out an arrangement so that the market will pay for services.”

All Boko Haram camps have completely been wiped out- Defence HQ

This is some cheering news from the Defence Headquarters. At its maiden media chat which held in Abuja yesterday September 9th, The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Colonel Rabe Abubakar said the military is winning the war against Boko Haram as all the camps of the terror group have been destroyed.

He said:
“These terrorists have been subdued, even if they are adopting other means and as they are re-strategizing, we are also doing the same. We have been coordinating on the air and ground assault to make sure that these terrorists' hideouts are completely decimated.
As I am speaking to you all the terrorists camps have completely been wiped out.
So right now they are completely in disarray, having no command and control of where to plan. We have even taken over the their camps and most of them have abandoned their bases and blended within towns and communities.
We are making a lot of headways and a lot of achievements and people should know that Boko Haram is no longer strong enough to hold ground.

He added that:
"Very soon this issue of whether they are in control of any territory in Nigeria or not will come to the open. We must begin to think of the nation. I am assuring you that they will never again recapture the territory taken from them, because what is happening right now with the deployment of troops, equipment and morale will ensure that."

Photos: Fire kills family of seven in Lagos apartment after neigbours refused to help

On Wednesday in Obele Lawanson Community, Surulere, Lagos,  a family of seven died in a fire disaster. The victims, who lived on 23, Michael Ogun Street, died because their co-tenants did not make effort to rescue them when they called out for help around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Those killed were a textile material dealer, 28-year-old Kelechi Onoja; his wife, 18-year-old Nkiru; their one year and eight months old first child, Favour; their three weeks unnamed second baby boy; two yet-to-be-identified family members; and Nkiru’s 80-year-old mother.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the only survivor was six-year-old Chidinma, a relative, who sustained burns injuries to her face and hands.
Our correspondent gathered that Nkiru had just given birth to her baby and her mother had visited for theOmugo rites, a popular Igbo culture of a mother nursing her daughter’s baby.
She was said to be preparing to return on Wednesday with the two unnamed ladies she brought with her, when tragedy struck.
The landlord of the house was late, while his immediate son lived in the Ijesha area.
The landlord’s grandson, Abdul Jelili, who lives opposite the apartment, said,
“I was sleeping when I heard a noise and quickly rushed out. I saw smoke coming out of their apartment and quickly got a stick, with which I broke their toilet window.
“Smoke billowed out, but I did not hear any movement in the house and could not tell if anybody was in. All the tenants in the other apartments did not come out, so I had to rush out to call for help.”
Another resident, Ejike Okpara, explained that the neighbours did not help because there was animosity among the five tenants in the house. He said Nkiru had been accused of not greeting the other tenants, among other issues, which had caused series of fight in the neighbourhood.
He said,
“So, when the fire began, the neighbours from both sides did not come out. When they finally came out, it was to rescue their families.”
But a tenant, Uzor Alajemba, said he had to first rescue his family when he heard someone raise the alarm.
PUNCH Metro learnt that youths and other members of the community eventually mobilised to the scene to combat the inferno.
A man, who claimed to be part of the rescue, Chima Dimkpa, explained that the burglar-proof bars made rescue difficult. It was learnt that the grandma had used a candle light to bathe the baby in the night, and forgot to put it off.

Our correspondent was told that after burning out, the fire ignited the table and engulfed the room. The 80-year-old woman was burnt to death.
Kelechi, who had also woken up with other members of the family, reportedly called for help.
He was said to have held tightly to the two sisters, while his wife carried their boy in her hand. They were burnt to death together.Dimkpa said,
“We could have rescued them but for the bars. Everything was smoking hot and untouchable, including the wall.”
A landlord on Ade Close, whose house shared a fence with the apartment, told PUNCH Metro the fire could have escalated, but for the support of his tenants.
The man said he mobilised his tenants to fight the flames from the roof.
A security guard, Desmond Mazeli, explained that officials of the Federal Fire Service arrived at the scene around 2am on Wednesday, adding that the lone survivor was taken out through the window.
Mazeli said no one knew the victim was in the toilet, until she coughed and was quickly rescued by the firefighters.
He said,
“I used a neighbour’s car to convey her to a private hospital in our area, while somebody called the Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service.
“At about 3am, the ambulance arrived, together with policemen from the Area C command. She was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital.”
Kelechi
Our correspondent observed as some friends and family members of the deceased, who got the news on Wednesday, broke down in tears.

Nkiru’s brother, Michael Awuzie, said they had arranged to see the family on Sunday for the child’s christening.
Awuzie wondered why it was only their apartment that was affected, adding that the police needed to investigate.
He said,
“Mama went to the market yesterday in preparation to leave for the village today (Wednesday) with the foodstuffs for the Omugo.
“It was to announce to the villagers that her daughter had given birth and she had brought the foodstuffs as a proof of the good news. And now, they have all died.”
The traditional leader of the Surulere area, Kareem Awoyemi, said he could not believe that the neighbours deserted the victims when they called for help.
Awoyemi said,
“I still don’t understand it. Are people not living in this house?”
Our correspondent learnt that the deceased’s charred remains had been handed over to the police, who had deposited them in a morgue.

Riding a horse in the North might get you shot

Riding a horse in Nigeria’s northern state of Borno could result in your violent death at the hands of government troops. The Nigerian army issued the warning as Boko Haram increasingly relies on horses to get around.
The radical Islamist group began waging a brutal war with Nigeria in 2009. Since then, Boko Haram has become infamous for leveling entire villages and killing or kidnapping residents.
In April 2014, the organization made international headlines and sparked global outrage after it abducted more than than 300 girls from the town of Chibok. Widely accused of corruption and human rights abuses, Nigerian security forces have struggled to contain the violence — and stop desertion in their own ranks.
The Nigerian army’s 7th Division is trying to limit Boko Haram’s options by curtailing horse riding in and around Borno’s capital Maiduguri. According to the country’s Daily Post newspaper and other local reports, the 7th Division announced the new rules earlier in September:
The 7[th]Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri has prohibited Borno residents, particularly traditional rulers from using horses in view of recent attacks by the Boko Haram sect which were executed by horse-riding militants. It warned that anyone found using a horse would be considered as an insurgent.
The warning was contained in a statement issued by spokesman of the Division, Colonel Tukur Gusau, during the destruction of dry fish worth millions of naira which were seized from the Boko Haram insurgents at different locations in Borno State.
The statement disclosed that the seized fish was another source of funding for the terrorists that has been truncated. He disclosed that the seized fish consist 2,000 cartons of smoke fish and dry meat that the insurgents carted away from innocent traders.
But government crackdowns have generally produced brief victories. Ironically, the animal-borne attacks are likely a product of previous restrictions on Boko Haram’s trademark motorbikes in 2011.
A BBC article at the time explained the specifics of that ban:
The Borno state government said it was now imposing a 24-hour ban on motorbikes in the city.
“The ban includes private as well as commercial motorcycles of all categories that operate within Maiduguri metropolis,” Usman Ciroma, spokesman for the Borno state governor, said in a statement.
Correspondents say motorbikes are one of the most common forms of transport in Maiduguri, as most people cannot afford cars.
The AFP news agency reports that the governor, Kashim Shettima, warned that the ban could be extended.
“If the security situation does not improve following this ban, the government will extend the ban to cover the whole state,” he was quoted as saying.
With many Nigerians unable to afford cars, motorbikes are an extremely popular alternative across the country.
The fighters who seized the schoolgirls in Chibok reportedly arrived on the two-wheeled vehicles. Curiously enough, the bike helmet law may have actually contributed to the rise of the extremists, according to The Atlantic’s Uri Friedman:
It’s a largely forgotten episode: In January 2009, the Nigerian government began enforcing a law mandating that motorbike drivers and passengers – most controversially, operators of the country’s freewheeling, ubiquitous motorcycle taxis – wear helmets. The authorities were responding to a serious public-health hazard; Nigeria’s roads are among the least safe in the world, and by 2009 motorcycle crashes accounted for more than half of all road-traffic injuries.
Initially, news coverage of the regulation was lighthearted, and primarily focused on the advent of pumpkin helmets. Riders were worried about helmets casting magic spells over them or giving them lice, and some were taunting traffic police by covering their heads with dried pumpkin shells, painted pots, or rubber tires. “We are impounding their bikes and want to take them to court so they can explain why they think wearing a calabash is good enough for their safety,” an exasperated Nigerian official told the BBC.
But the government’s bike-helmet drive soon took a far darker turn. In Maiduguri, the capital of the northeastern state of Borno, a sect led by the Muslim cleric Mohammed Yusuf was agitating for an Islamic state and railing against secular education. The group wasn’t yet calling for the violent overthrow of the Nigerian government, but it was increasingly at odds with local authorities. Its members were occasionally arrested and intermittently skirmished with police.
With horses now restricted in Borno, one wonders how Boko Haram members will travel next.

Angelina Jolie reveals heartbreaking tale of young girls raped & sold for $40

The Hollywood star and UN special envoy who is a long-standing campaigner gave a heartbreaking account of young girls she has met in conflict zones who have been repeatedly raped and sold off for as little as $40 each. The actress appeared alongside former Foreign Secretary William Hague before the House of Lords Committee to speak about their campaign against sexual violence in conflict.
"For over 10 years I had been visiting the field and meeting with families and survivors of sexual violence who felt for so long that their voices simply didn’t matter – they weren’t heard and they carried a great shame. I remember distinctly meeting this little girl, who was very young – probably about 7 or 8 – and she was rocking backwards and forwards and staring at the wall and tears streaming down her face because she had been brutally raped multiple times." She said.
According to The Independent, Jolie described how she had felt "absolutely helpless" after meeting one young girl who refused to speak to anyone after being "brutally raped multiple times". She said what was even worse than the physical violence was the feeling of worthlessness they felt when men bartered over their monetary value when selling them off as sex slaves.
"More recently I met a 13-year-old girl in Iraq who had been kept in a room with many other girls. They were taken out in twos, brought to this very dirty room with this dirty couch and raped repeatedly. They told me what was even worse than this physical violence was they had to stand in rooms and watch their friends be sold. To hear men arguing over what they were worth. Were they worth $40, $50? What was the price, their value? And how humiliating that was."
Updating the committee on progress since then, Angelina said:
"The most important thing is to understand what it's not: it's not sexual, it's a violent, brutal, terrorizing weapon, and it is used unfortunately everywhere. The most aggressive terrorist group in the world today knows what we know; knows that it is a very effective weapon and [is] using it as a center point of their terror and their way of destroying communities and families and attacking, destroying and dehumanizing." She added: "I know what would happen to my family if I were raped or my daughters were raped. All of you sitting in this room. What would that do to their lives, to your family structure? You would want to know it was wrong and that the world thought it was wrong and the person who did this to you didn't just walk away."

See the question this Nigerian mum asked on Facebook

Stumbled on this on Facebook on a group for mothers. After getting advice from her fellow mums, the woman further explained when people asked if the lady was her husband's current girlfriend or an ex. "She's an ex-girlfriend because he said they are no more together. But we stay in the same compound. I took her as my sister, not knowing she was dating my husband" she wrote
