Two Nigerian students are among four foreign students allegedly duped by a real estate agent and his aide in India.
According to a report by Times of India, the Nigerian students, Nasa Chinasa and Cosy Linda were scammed alongside two Ghanaians, Reverend Daniel and Reverend Osama, and an Indian student identified as Rose.
The agent, Punit Nandwani, collected several sums totalling 278,000 Indian Rupees (about N866,000) from the students.
He was contracted to secure suitable flats for them.
But Nandwani disappeared and switched off his cell phone after collecting their monies and has since been on the run.
Chinasa, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at a city college, then reported the case to officers at the Kondhwa police station.
Sub-inspector Nitin Atkare, confirmed the incident on Monday.
"Nandwani was staying in a rented flat in Undri. He had offered this flat on rent to three of the students, pretending to be the property's owner," he said.
"He had shown another flat on NIBM Road to the two other students."
Atkare said a police team visited Nandwani's residence and found it locked.
"We are working on clues and will arrest the real estate agent and his aide as soon as possible," he added.
Police are still investigating the matter.
